My Educational Philosophy
While reading the philosophy on education by different eminent thinkers, I realized that our definition of education is limited only to one direction. We call people educated if one is having a good job. As society is now organized we send our children to school to learn some technique by which they can eventually earn a livelihood and attain a secure economic position.
I would like to create such kind of education where everyone is aware of the fact that we are not being educated merely to get a better job, to find security, to become somebody important or specialists addicted to knowledge. J. Krishnamurti says “ Though knowledge and efficiency are necessary , to lay chief emphasis on them only leads to conflict and confusion”
Education should be such which develops independent thinking in students which is only possible when students are not bombarded with different types of information. They should be exposed to real life situations, examples from our daily lives through which they can connect themselves and express their views on it. Education should be such which arouses interest in learner. It can be done by involving them in teaching learning process and not when teacher acts as a dictator. The children shouldn’t be fearful of the teacher. The teaching should be from concrete to abstract like before teaching A for Apple , some activity can be planned where children are actually seeing the Apple, touching and feeling its texture and tasting it. When concepts are taught in such a way, children grasp it in a much better way. As Aurobindo’s third principle of education is to work from near to far. We must also not take up the nature by roots from the earth in which it must grow or surround the mind with images and ideas of life which is alien to them. The educator must consider his surroundings, his culture , his language etc while dealing with individuals in class.
Education should develop an integrated outlook on life like The Mother says” Education to be complete must have five principle aspects corresponding to the five principal activities of the human being the physical, the vital, the mental, the psychic and the spiritual.”Education should focus on all these elements for the holistic development of the individual. It should encourage children to play outside in sun, it should also develop a taste for healthy and simple foods in order to give health and strength to body and not to satisfy the taste buds. It can be done by offering such food in school as a healthy mind resides in a healthy body. The children should be allowed to play in mud and dust to satisfy their sensorial needs. Every individual has the purpose of his life on earth and education should be such so that it helps in seeking their purpose of life and make it perfect for a noble use. The education should be such so that there is no ego in an individual. There should be no competition amongst children in class and the main focus should be on learning. As Krishnamurti says “ Present education is geared to war, competition and mutual destruction.”
The school should encourage the children to understand one another’s difficulties and peculiarities, moods and tempers; for then, as they grow up, they will be more thoughtful and patient in their relationship with others.
Education should also help the student to discover what he is most interested in. If he doesn’t find his true vocation, all his life will seem wasted ; he will feel frustrated doing something which he doesn’t want to do. This is possible when teacher observes each and every individual inside and outside the class and understands their feelings and shares their thoughts.
As Aurobindo says “ For the educationist has to do , not with the dead material like the artist or sculptor but with an infinitely subtle and sensitive organism. He cannot shape an educational masterpiece out of human wood or stone ; he has to work in the elusive substance of mind and respect the limits imposed by the fragile human body.” Education should be such that if the individual is not able to understand any topic, it should not be imposed on him. Every individual learns at its own pace and the educator should respect that.
I believe such education will help the individual and the society to grow and flourish together.
